The grant monies will provide residents of Clark County, as well as their immediate caregivers, the benefit of therapeutic massage and bodywork while being treated as a patient of Floyd Memorial Hospital and/or the radiation therapy department located in the Cancer Center of Indiana.

According to Rayna Withers, Massage Therapy Program Director at Floyd Memorial, “The support from the Southern Indiana Community Foundation reflects the Foundation’s desire to offer residents of Clark County the same benefits patients are experiencing not only in our community but nationwide. These benefits include: reduction of cancer related fatigue, boosting the immune system functioning, reduction of pain, emotional/mental stress levels, blood pressure and pulse rates. This grant will be integral in the continuation and growth of our massage therapy program and is a great opportunity for patients here at Floyd Memorial who are residents of Clark County.”

The Floyd Memorial Laboratory/Blood Bank has earned accreditation from AABB for transfusion services. The accreditation, which is good for two years, follows an intensive on-site assessment by specially trained AABB assessors and measures the level of medical, technical and administrative performance within the facility against the standards set by AABB.

Floyd Memorial is one of approximately 1,800 facilities across the United States and internationally that have earned AABB Accreditation. “The accreditation is a reflection of our goal of achieving the highest standards possible,” said Laboratory Director Jeff Whitesel. “This accreditation is important because it evaluates the Blood Bank separately from the Laboratory and approaches its inspection from the external standpoint of a patient rather than from an internal point of view.”

The AABB inspector was particularly complimentary of Floyd Memorial’s transfusion process, transfusion audits and Healthstream Blood Bank educational tools for associates. ”Floyd Memorial voluntarily sought AABB Accreditation because the program assists facilities in achieving excellence by promoting a level of professional and medical expertise that contributes to quality performance,” said Floyd Memorial President and CEO Mark D. Shugarman. “The quality of our transfusion activities is the direct result of a team effort by multiple hospital departments.”

Since 1958, AABB has been engaged in the accreditation of blood banks and transfusion services. Today its Accreditation Program assists blood banks, transfusion services, cellular therapy facilities, relationship testing laboratories, immunohematology reference laboratories and perioperative services in determining whether methods, procedures, personnel knowledge, equipment and the physical plant meet established requirements. The minimum requirements for accreditation are based primarily on a set of specific standards for the area in which accreditation is being sought. These standards not only reflect the level of professional proficiency for blood banks and transfusion services in the United States, but also provide the basis for practice in similar facilities around the world.

A simple finger-stick blood test can identify a genetic disorder linked to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Floyd Memorial and Talecris Biotherapeutics will be offering the screening free of charge to patients who meet screening guidelines.

Alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) affects an estimated 100,000 Americans but is diagnosed in fewer than five percent of the population. The deficiency is responsible for up to three percent of COPD cases in the U.S., and is the most prevalent, and potentially fatal hereditary disease in Caucasians. However, through an easy screening, the deficiency can be identified.

The screening will be held on Thursday, December 4 from Noon to 5 p.m. in the Paris Health Education Center at Floyd Memorial. The screening involves a simple needlestick, and fasting is not required.

The American Thoracic Society (ATS) provides the following recommendations for patients who should be tested for the deficiency:

All adults with symptomatic emphysema regardless of smoking history

All adults with symptomatic COPD regardless of smoking history

All adults with symptomatic asthma whose airflow obstruction in incompletely reversible after bronchodilator therapy

Asymptomatic patients with persistent obstruction on pulmonary function tests with identifiable risk factors (eg, smoking, occupational exposure)

Siblings of individuals with AATD

Pre-registration is required for the screening. To register, call 1-800-4-SOURCE (1-800-476-8723). You will be asked a series of questions to qualify for the screening. If you have any questions about the screening guidelines talk to your primary care physician about whether or not you qualify.

Move Marks Another Exciting Advance for the Wound Healing Center

The wound care program at Floyd Memorial began in 1996 in response to a need that became apparent after the opening of the hospital’s Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate. The rate of amputation for people with diabetes is ten times that of people without diabetes, and amputation is often the result of a foot wound that will not heal. To help prevent this, the hospital opened a high-risk foot clinic.

Over the years, the clinic grew to the point where the staff was also seeing many wounds in people who did not have diabetes. Last year marked the opening of the comprehensive Wound Healing Center. Now, the program is again expanding to include hyperbaric oxygen therapy. To accommodate this new service and provide more space to treat patients, the center has relocated to a larger facility on the Floyd Memorial campus. The Center’s new home is off State Street where the Emergency Center was previously located.

Team Treats All Types of Wounds

The team at the Center treats patients with all types of wounds including: diabetic ulcers; pressure ulcers; venous stasis ulcers (common in people with severe varicose veins or blood clots); ischemic ulcers (caused by poor blood supply); vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels in patients with conditions such as arthritis); traumatic and surgical wounds; spider and animal bites; ulcers brought on by chemotherapy; and non-healing sores in patients with skin cancer.

Multidisciplinary Approach Is a Tremendous Benefit to Patients

“We are excited to offer such a high level of multidisciplinary care,” said Rodney Chou, MD, a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation and medical director of the Center. “The Center brings together the expertise of a team of physicians, nurses and other experts from a variety of fields who focus on the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic wounds. It gives patients access to all the specialties needed to receive the best possible program of care.” For example, a wound that won’t heal due to poor circulation may benefit from the care of a vascular surgeon who can open up a blocked artery and restore healthy blood flow to the area. Another wound may need the care of a plastic surgeon who can perform a skin graft.

The nurses at the Center all have advanced training in wound healing. Kathy Nugent, RN, CWOCN, is a certified wound ostomy nurse. “The Center makes comprehensive care easily accessible to patients. They don’t need a physician referral, but can simply call us to make an appointment if they have a wound that concerns them.”

Another area involved in patient care is physical therapy. Tom Russell is the director of rehabilitation services at Floyd Memorial and the hospital’s liaison to the Wound Healing Center. “There are many ways physical therapy can be part of the healing process,” he explained. “One is when wounds on the feet or legs require the patient to be immobile for several weeks. That patient will need to build up his balance and strength, and rehab is beneficial. We also work with the Center when patients need certain devices or orthotics.”

“With our multidisciplinary team and new facility,” said Dr. Chou, “we are becoming the area’s preeminent wound care center.”
